Good news! Thanks to Asclera®, you may no longer need to feel self-conscious about showing your legs due to spider veins. Asclera® is an FDA-approved treatment used in a procedure called sclerotherapy. It’s administered in-office by a healthcare provider to treat two types of veins in the lower extremities, uncomplicated spider and uncomplicated reticular veins.

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution (sclerosing agent) into affected veins. It has been clinically well-proven and has been in use since 1939.

Post injection you should expect some redness and bruising at the injection site. Maintain compression for 2 to 3 days after treatment of spider veins and for 5 to 7 days for reticular veins. For more information on aftercare see below.

What to expect:

Before your treatment:

  • Use of compression garment is recommended
  • The day of treatment, avoid using lotion or shaving your legs.

Day of treatment:

  • A very fine needle is used to inject Asclera® into veins
  • A typical sclerotherapy treatment lasts 15-45 minutes.
  • A slight stinging may be experienced with each injection.
  • It is not unusual to see the initial clearing of the treated vein followed by a return of blood flow to the area.
  • After each injection is complete, a small pressure dressing may be used. Such dressings may be
removed in the evening before bedtime.

After treatment:

  • Walk for 15-20 minutes immediately following the procedure and daily for the next few days.
  • Wear compression stockings continuously for 2-3 days following the procedure.
  • For 2-3 days after treatment avoid:
    • heavy exercise
    • sunbathing
    • hot-tubs/sauna
    • extending periods of sitting or standing such as long plane flights
  • It can take several weeks to see the final results and additional treatments may be required.
  • Post-treatment compression is necessary to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
  • It is important to realize that sclerotherapy does not prevent the development of new spider veins and/or varicosities as an individual continues to age.
